Back to the Future: Enjoying Open Air Cinema Together

Our first outing as part of this summer’s Nexus Tribe sessions – our vibrant inclusive group for 16- to 25-year-olds – took us to Scoop at More London to watch the 1980s classic sci-fi movie ‘Back to the Future’.

Our group at Scoop More London

We gathered at Bethwin Road Adventure Playground and went to the supermarket to buy snacks before catching the bus to Tower Bridge. Sitting together on the upper deck, we bonded over discussion of our favourite films and food. We then took a short walk over to the Scoop amphitheatre to secure ourselves prime seats ahead of the film screening, which was being put on as part of London Bridge City’s Summer by the River programme.

As we tucked into our packed lunches, we played a game where we created stories together by each adding one word. Each story turned out more surreal than the last!

Rainbow over Tower Bridge

In typical British fashion, our creative process was interrupted by a sudden rain shower. We reached for our raincoats and briefly wondered if we would need to run for cover. But before we knew it, a rainbow appeared, soon followed by blue sky. The rain was long forgotten by the time the screening started, and we made ourselves comfortable as we turned our attention to the time-travelling adventure.

As we considered the themes of how the characters’ present actions impact their futures and failure before success or courage and self belief, each young person took a stand on the movie. Faaud loved how the past met the future and gave it a 8/10. While Frankie is not keen on this type of movie he still gave the outing a 6/10 for the company!

We’re looking forward to getting together again for more hangouts over the summer, with workshops at the Bethwin Road Adventure Playground in SE5 every Thursday and more outings across London on selected Mondays and Tuesdays.

We’ll be heading to the open-air cinema at Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens on 30th July to see another classic, ‘Kung Fu Panda’. We hope you can join us for this or other future Nexus Tribe sessions. Click here to view the full calendar and book your place.
