The Indispensable Role of a Teaching Assistant: Michael’s Many Hats

In the third of our series of reflections on our pilot Thrive Education project, a 15-week Alternative Provision (AP) for young neurodiverse people struggling to attend school or who have partly dropped out, we celebrate our teaching assistant, Michael, and his many hats.

The Steady Presence That Holds Everything Together

A great teaching assistant is more than just support - they are the backbone of the learning environment. Michael, tall and reflective, carries a presence that cannot be ignored. He embodies what we call "compassionate boundaries". Kind yet firm, he is exactly what these young people, often bruised by past experiences, need.

'The Flash' at Work

Michael’s day begins like that of a removal man - unpacking the shed and, in just 30 minutes, setting up an entire school. He moves with the speed and efficiency of the Flash! Once that’s done, he shifts into his next role: Breakfast Club Guru. He welcomes each student, makes them feel at ease, and ensures the day starts on a positive note.

Academic Support and Emotional Guidance

With breakfast wrapped up, the first class of the day begins. Mornings are dedicated to academics, and Michael is ever-present; helping one student with their work, guiding another through emotional regulation, or assisting someone in tackling a challenge. His presence provides reassurance and stability.

The 'Godfather' of Lunchtime

After a short break, it’s time for lunch, and Michael takes on yet another role: that of the Godfather at the table. He joins the students for food, engaging in conversation, then perhaps a game of pool or keeping a watchful eye in the playground. He is there, quietly ensuring everything runs smoothly.

Then, just as quickly, Flash gets back on track - packing everything up by 2pm to prepare the lunch time space for the next users.

Hands-On Project Work

By 2pm, it’s time for project work, an exciting, hands-on class where students collaborate to create their own animation movie: a five-minute piece complete with music, images, and dialogue. Each young person has a task, and only through teamwork will their vision come to life.

Michael is there again, guiding one student through writing, another through creative development, and another through problem-solving. We overhear whispers of incredible story ideas - one set in a hospital, another using WWII as a backdrop, and yet another tackling climate change. No matter the project, Michael shifts roles effortlessly, providing steady support with his calm yet assertive approach.

The Oil in the Chain

Michael is the force that keeps everything running smoothly. Whether setting up, guiding, supporting, or tidying up, he does it all with quiet efficiency and an unwavering commitment to the students. His presence is a defining element of the school’s success.

A great teaching assistant is not just an extra pair of hands, they are an essential part of the learning journey. With his many hats, Michael embodies patience, adaptability, and unwavering dedication. He is the quiet strength that allows both students and teachers to thrive.
