Nexus Tribe Ride Together: Building Skills, Confidence...and a Sense of Community
Nexus Tribe is our dynamic group for 16- to 20-year-olds, where we foster personal growth, teamwork, and well-being through engaging activities. Beyond just adventure and camaraderie, the group also provides a space for young people to reflect on their next steps in life, particularly in career development.
Our outings are designed to provide a chance to discover new fields of work and develop skills that could shape future career paths. Recently, we stepped outside our usual setting for an exciting bike ride. Our adventure had three benefits: developing road safety skills, physical fitness, and mental well-being.
Preparing for the Ride
Before setting off, we dedicated time to learning and preparation. As part of the "Skills and Team" section of our program, we covered essential road safety topics, including road signs, awareness, and cycling etiquette. We also performed a thorough safety check on our bikes, ensuring brakes, tires, and gears were in good condition. Each participant was equipped with a high-visibility vest, a helmet, and proper bike lights for maximum safety.
Hitting the Road
With all checks complete, we hit the road, practicing awareness and safe cycling techniques. The group maintained a steady pace, prioritizing safety while still enjoying the ride. Banter and laughter filled the air as we encouraged each other along the way, balancing fun with responsibility.
A Stop at Burgess Park
Our destination was Burgess Park, where we cycled around the lake, with designated safe points to regroup and check in. The atmosphere was electric with friendly competition. Some pushed their speed within safe limits, while others simply enjoyed the fresh air and the sense of freedom that cycling brings. Laughter, cheers, and playful challenges kept spirits high, reinforcing the sense of community within Nexus Tribe. A first aid pack was on hand, ensuring that safety remained a priority throughout the ride.
Wrapping Up the Evening
After a fulfilling ride, we returned for dinner (delicious chicken and rice) where we gathered for a "Circle of Trust." This reflective moment allowed everyone to share their thoughts on the experience, reinforcing our commitment to both physical activity and mental well-being. The feedback was unanimous: the group loved the outing and wanted more exercise-based activities incorporated into our program.
Moving Forward
This bike ride was a perfect blend of learning, excitement, and bonding. Given the enthusiastic response, we’re excited to plan more outdoor activities that encourage movement, teamwork, and personal growth. Stay tuned for our next adventure!
